Abstract: Tight binding (TB) has a long history. However, in the last two decades it has primarily been used by only a small number of groups who have seen it go into fashion for a short while, and then fall out of favour for several years, only to be rediscovered again, etc. Its most popular recent form is Density Functional Tight Binding (DFTB), which has suddenly gained a great deal of attention from a number of groups. Here I will summarise what DFTB is, how recent versions have blended it with empirical methodologies with great success, and how it is now being extended. I will also discuss recent applications of TB.
